Opportunities for Bachelors Interns

BSW Interns

The following information outlines a typical practicum experience for a 10 month Bachelor of Social Work placement at KW Counselling Services. We also offer placements for Intake Interns.

Fall Term

Group Work Training and Agency Orientation

  • Attend KW Counselling Services agency orientation
  • Attend Temper Taming Together group facilitation training

Supervision

  • Participate in weekly BSW Intern group supervision sessions. Duration: 1 hour.
  • Participate in bi-weekly individual supervisionsessions. Duration: 1 hour.

Group Work

Temper Taming Together

  • Co-facilitate two agency-based emotions regulation group for children ages 5-12 years.
  • Participation includes group recruitment,parent and child prescreening interviews, weekly 90 minute group co-facilitation, debriefing, and preparation of materials for future sessions.

Research and Evaluation

Coordinate and facilitate program evaluation; administration of questionnaires, data collection and data input.

Administration

Assist with preparation of physical resources and kits given to each emotions management group.

Winter Term

Continue to engage in all opportunities from the Fall term, PLUS:

Clinical & Group Work Training and Agency Orientation

Attend clinical orientation in the new year as a review.

Group Work

Parenting with Passion

Participation includes assisting a parent educator to co-facilitate a 6-8 week parent education group and/or 1-day workshop.

Spring Term

Continue to engage in all opportunities from the Fall term, PLUS:

Individual Counselling:

Participate in Thursday Walk In Counselling Clinic as observer, intake worker and co-counsellor

Group Counselling

Emotions management group programs for children and youth

  • Temper Taming Together

Intake Interns

The following information outlines a typical practicum experience for an Intake Intern.

Training and Agency Orientation

  • Attend KW Counselling Services agency orientation
  • Participate in internal staff development opportunities

Supervision

  • Participate in weekly Intern group supervision sessions. Duration: 1 hour
  • Participate in weekly individual supervision sessions. Duration: 1 hour
  • Participate in monthly Intake meetings: 1.5 hours

Group Work

Opportunities to participate in agency group programs, based on interest and availability (eg, Temper Taming Together, Parenting With Passion, Immigrant Women Together, etc.)

Direct Service and Administration

  • Provide information to clients, partners and community members on agency services and community resources
  • Create client files and assign to appropriate programs and therapists
  • Participate in safety planning and referrals to outside agencies as appropriate

Individual Counselling

Opportunities to shadow counselling sessions at Walk-In Clinic and potentially in ongoing service.
