Strengthening Our Community

In May 2012, KW Counselling Services launched “Strengthening Our Community,” a media campaign which features four positive actions parents and other caring adults can take to nurture the well-being of all children and teens in the Waterloo Region.

The campaign is funded by the Lyle S. Hallman Foundation. Mr. Jim Hallman, stated, “This grant continues a long tradition established by my father, Lyle Hallman, of investing in both the individual child and the community’s capacity to support the healthy development of all children.”

The Four Positive Actions emphasize:

  1. Ensuring parental self-care, especially good mental health
  2. Reading aloud with children early in life to foster optimal brain development
  3. Enjoying family time together
  4. Placing value on diversity and acceptance of others

The campaign began with a series of bus shelter posters displayed throughout the region as well as ads featured in The Waterloo Regional Record. The posters and ads featured a link to KWKids.com, a website (which was then) operated by the Parenting with Passion program at KW Counselling Services. KWKids.com provides information and resources that enhance the messages of the Four Positive Actions.

The second stage of the campaign included the airing of Public Service Announcements (PSA) that were aired on CTV SWO and radio ads that ran on 91.5 The Beat. These 15 second PSAs can be viewed by clicking on the images below.

The final and current stage of the campaign includes the redistribution of our acclaimed Parenting with Passion Video Series that have been reproduced to include the four PSAs. In addition, small card-sized posters of the Four Positive Actions are being distributed throughout the region at parenting courses, resource and health fairs, and other public gatherings.
