The Pride Flag

The Rainbow Flag or Pride Flag has been in the local news quite a bit lately.  In June 2017, our partners at the WRDSB decided to fly the Pride Flag at all of their schools to celebrate Pride Month.  A few flags were vandalized or stolen and the flags triggered many discussions between those who applauded the action and those who opposed it.  This month, Harold Albrecht MP made a statement that Pride flags should not have flown on the same masts as Canadian flags.  At some schools this happened because the school only had one flag pole.

Explaining Same-Sex Families to Kids

According to Stats Canada’s 2011 National Household Survey, there were 64,575 same-sex couple families in Canada in 2011 (up 42.4% from 2006). That same year, 9,600 children were living with same-sex parents.  Here are some tips for answering questions and having conversations with kids.

Orlando

When I came into work this morning I read that the deadliest mass shooting in United States history has happened, killing 50 LGBTQ+ individuals and their allies in Orlando. This fills me with such deep sadness and anger. I worry that violence like this will make some LGBTQ+ people so silent that they will feel they can never come out of the closet. I worry that our sense of ally ship and community will lose its meaning. However, my hope is stronger than my fear. My hope is that people come together as a community to mourn and heal, to create connections and recognize that we have the power to support each other through this hurt.  During this Pride Month and the Holy Month of Ramadan, may we come together as a diverse, beautiful community to foster strength and healing in the face of this tragedy.
