Group Supports
KW Counselling Services offers a variety of group supports that vary in their design and method. They may be more counselling-based and therapeutic, or lean more toward workshop, education and experience-based programs.
STRONG MOMS, SAFE KIDS
Strong Moms, Safe Kids is a special 10-week group for mothers who have experienced abuse in intimate relationships and their children ages 5-18 who have witnessed abuse in their homes. The group is provided free of charge and supports these families in the healing process and in regaining their confidence and skills. To participate, it is a requirement that mothers are living apart from the person who abused them.
SMSK provides opportunities for families to interact together in a large group format then also provides separate smaller groups for mothers, older children, and younger children. The smaller groups allow participants to engage in the week’s topic in developmentally appropriate ways and with peers of the same age. Meals will be provided from 5:30-6:00pm.
This program is for:
- Mothers who have experienced abuse in intimate relationships
- Their children, ages 5-18, who have witnessed abuse in their homes
- Mothers living apart from the person who abused them
- Families of all cultures: those not comfortable with English can have an interpreter provided for them
The program focuses on the relationship between mothers and their children, recognizing that when a mother experiences intense times in her life, it is difficult to heal and also tune into their children’s needs. The group provides children and youth with the opportunity to move beyond what happened in their family in a safe and therapeutic way. By supporting mothers and helping them understand the trauma through their children’s eyes, they are better able to provide the ongoing emotional support their children need.
Registration for our Spring 2023 session is now open. The Spring session begins Wednesday, April 19 and runs for 10 weeks, concluding on June 21. An intake call is required to participate, please contact Janet De Gazon for more information and to book an intake appointment at jdegazon@kwcounselling.com or 519.884.0000 x252.
