Lyle’s Place

Lyle S. Hallman

Everyone who visits KW Counselling Services is greeted by Lyle Hallman’s smiling face and a plaque that reads:

“We were privileged to have Lyle Hallman on our Board of Directors for over 50 years. His vision and values shaped and steered our mission of service to the whole community. In his honour, and in grateful recognition of the Lyle S. Hallman Foundation’s gift to our Agency, we dedicate this building in Lyle’s memory as Lyle’s Place.”

Today, on what would have been Lyle’s 93rd birthday, we remember the legacy of Lyle S. Hallman.

Lyle was born in 1922 and raised in Preston (Cambridge). He served in WWII with the Royal Canadian Air Force and after the war, started Hallman Construction Ltd. As his business expanded, Lyle was able focus on his passion for philanthropy and making a difference in the lives of the people in his community.

Annual Report 1955_Page_02

In 1955, KW Counselling Services was five years old. The population of KW was 72,595 and the agency had served over 1,500 families in its five years. That was also the year Lyle Hallman joined our Board of Directors. From that time forward, we benefitted greatly from his leadership and support.

In 1997, we had to move unexpectedly to a new location at Waterloo Town Square. The facility required major renovations to be suitable for our work and we ran a fundraising campaign for capital funds to which the Hallman family made a large contribution. By 2005, we had outgrown that location and ran a campaign to help us construct a new building. Again, the Hallman family came to our rescue, spearheading the campaign to build the home we have now.

In 2011, The Lyle S. Hallman Foundation provided us with a grant for a project called Strengthening Our Community. This project spoke directly to Lyle’s priorities of education and improving the lives of children in our community. The goal of this massive, two-year media campaign was to strengthen the healthy development of children by educating parents, families and neighbourhoods on key critical actions needed for children’s successful development and learning.

Strengthening Our Community

This year, we have just received a grant from the Lyle S. Hallman Foundation for a new Parenting with Passion project that is unlike anything we have undertaken before. Please stay tuned for more information as this exciting project gets off the ground!

Lyle Hallman’s philanthropy and community-building were not limited to KW Counselling Services. You have probably seen the Lyle S. Hallman Swimming Pool, heard of the Lyle S. Hallman Institute for Health Promotion at the University of Waterloo and the Lyle S. Hallman Chair in Child and Family Development and Faculty of Social Work at Wilfrid Laurier University.

Lyle passed away in 2003, but during his lifetime, he was recognized with the Canada 125 Medal, an honourary Doctor of Laws Degree from the University of Waterloo and by being invested in the Order of Canada. His legacy lives on in the foundation that bears his name which makes grants to support health, education and children’s initiatives that inspire and grow individual and community potential. Lyle’s spirit of generosity and community-mindedness lives on here at Lyle’s Place in the work of KW Counselling Services.
